Meet Walk MS Hutchinson Ambassador Brian Bonte, diagnosed in 1995
Dr. Brian Bonte, this year’s Walk MS Hutchinson Ambassador, has been living with multiple sclerosis for nearly two decades. This year marks his first time participating in Walk MS, which he sees as an opportunity to raise critical funds and awareness to move us closer to a world free of the disease.
In what way has MS made the biggest impact on your life?
MS has slowed me down. My mobility has been restricted to a power chair and scooter.
Why did you decide to participate in Walk MS?
I feel the walk will help spread the awareness of the disease.
What’s your favorite thing about Walk MS?
The involvement of so many caring people.
How many years have you participated in the event?
This is my first time participating in Walk MS, but I have participated in four Challenge Walks MS events.
Are you involved in the National MS Society in other ways besides Walk MS?
I have been the local support group leader for more than 12 years.
What is one thing you wish people could understand about MS?
It can affect anyone, and the disability is different for each person.
What is the most important, meaningful or memorable connection you have made since being diagnosed with MS or having someone close to you diagnosed?
I have a deeper understanding of disability and what drives people to continue through obstacles.
What makes you a great walk ambassador?
I have had MS for more than 18 years and hopefully continue to exhibit that I have MS, but MS doesn’t have me.
What makes your story with MS unique?
I am a physician with MS, which helps me empathize and understand my patient’s disabilities better.
