Examples of "elevator speeches"
You can use your speech to simply introduce yourself, to ask for action on an issue that's important for you or as a thank you. Remember, you're the expert on your story. Keep it short and on topic, and be sure to say "thank you" when you're done!
- Hi! I just wanted to come over and introduce myself. My name is Jenna Washnieski and I'm your constituent. I work at the National MS Society and it is a cause that is very important to me. People with MS and their families face really tough challenges and I want to be sure the important programs and services they rely on are not cut. It's so important that people are able to live as independently as possible in their communities. I'd truly appreciate your support on this topic.
- Hello! It's nice to meet you. My name is _____ and I live in your district. I I've been living with MS for five years and am an activist with the MS Society. I have been on one of the MS drugs since I was diagnosed and it has helped me so much. I have been able to stay employed and active in my community because of it. It is important that these drugs are affordable and available to people who need them. Without MS medications, the disease progresses faster and results in even more expensive medical costs. Please remember my story when you work on health care legislation.
- Hello, my name is _______ and I just wanted to thank you for helping to pass the Complete Streets bill which makes our communities more accessible. I have MS and have been using a scooter for years. It's important that I am able to get around and enjoy our neighborhood with my family. The Complete Streets law helps ensure I will have safe and reliable access in my scooter.
Tip from MS activist David Chaikin: "When you meet your legislator, be sure to follow up with a call or e-mail within the week. This will help you build a relationship with him or her."
