Amy Kainz, diagnosed 2006
What do you remember most from the day you were diagnosed?
I thought, “Thank goodness there is a reason why I’m feeling so crummy, and I’m not totally crazy.” I decided I needed to learn more about MS. I was scared and uncertain what to expect…and still am.
Why did you decide to participate in Bike MS?
My good friend Sonya had been riding for her aunt, sister and now me for a few years. I’ve meet her at the finish line in the past and I told her I’d like to ride someday. I decided 2008 should be the year. I talked with some friends and we formed a team, “Pedaling for a Purpose”. Without the support of my friends, family and people I don’t even know, I would not have been able to participate. I also do the ride because I want to do something to help myself and others who live with MS.
What do you enjoy most about Bike MS?
Crossing the finish line and being met by so many people cheering me on. I also enjoyed spending time with my friends for a good cause. I love the support from total strangers and the friendliness of everyone.
What advice do you have for someone newly diagnosed?
Keep an open mind. Stay positive and focus on the things you can do. Take one day at a time. Get connected with others with MS and stay involved. Be proactive and your own advocate with the disease.
