Tracy BohmMeet Tracy Bohm, diagnosed in 2005

Tracy, a mother of five, is the official ambassador for Walk MS: Christopher & Banks Mankato Walk 2009 Ambassador and is captain of “Team Move.” She also is part of the recently launched volunteer advisory group that is working with the National MS Society, Minnesota Chapter to develop new programs and opportunities specifically geared toward people in their 20s and 30s who live with MS.

What do you remember from the day you were diagnosed?
I remember crying because I thought I was going to go downhill fast. On my way home from the doctor, I was crying while listening to the radio when the song “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack came on. It made me realize I needed to be grateful for everything I had and that I shouldn’t lay down and let the disease take over.

What made you decide to participate in Walk MS?
I ultimately felt a great need to do anything I could to give to the cause. I want to encourage others who battle this disease and let them know that they aren’t alone. We need to fight for ourselves! I’m going to do whatever I can for the society and others.

What do you enjoy most about the event?
The people! At Walk MS, you meet such wonderful people — good people who care and are fighting for not just themselves or for the society, but for you, too! We are all worth every effort that is made to raise money for this cause.

What advice would you give someone who is newly diagnosed with MS?
Don’t let the words “you have MS” take control over you! Hear it, accept it, start therapy, and continue living your life everyday like it’s the last day. Don’t lose yourself in self pity. Be a fighter! Find support through the MS society, family and friends.
