Contessa, diagnosed in 2003, wants people to understand that adults are not the only ones living with multiple sclerosis. Contessa is one of 10,000 children living with MS. Now 15, she is determined to fight back against her disease.
Contessa and her mother Deiha are doing everything they can to fight MS now. Deiha volunteers with Walk MS while Contessa has her own team.
“Contessa has educated herself with all kinds of information about MS and she is eager to inform others of the struggle she faces each day,” says Deiha.
“Sometimes people ask me questions like, ‘What is the problem with you? What is MS?’ They should know that adults are not the only ones who can get MS. Kids get MS too,” says Contessa.
To Contessa's family, the most important part of Bike MS and other MS Society fundraisers is support and education. Deiha explains, “We want to bring this disease to people’s attention so that there may be more of a push to bring programs and assistance to children living with MS and their families."
