Whippany, NJ – On June 15, Whippany resident Michael Furey will tackle the mucky obstacles at MuckFest MS to help overcome multiple sclerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system for which there is no cure. This is the second year Michael's team "Filth & Furey" will run to support over 2 million people worldwide who live with this disease.
Michael's first MS symptoms came out of nowhere; waking up one morning to numb feet. Not knowing what was happening, he made an appointment with his physician. After being advised the cause could be stress or exercise related, Michael sought out a second opinion and that's when he heard the words multiple sclerosis for the first time. For the next nine months the numbness slowly climbed up his body, and he began to feel numbness everywhere. Since being diagnosed and recovering form that first episode, Michael has been very fortunate to maintain an active lifestyle, but deals everyday with the unknown and unanswered questions about the future that comes with an MS diagnosis.
Last year Michael started team "Filth & Furey" and ran in his first MuckFest MS raising over $7,000, making "Filth & Furey" one of the top fundraising teams. This year Michael set a goal of $8,000 and has already surpassed it with generous donations from friends, family and complete strangers. "This important event is close to my heart because it not only allows me to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the fight to find a cure and help others living with this disease, but it also reinforces that MS does not define me. I am living the life I want and I hope to help others living with MS do the same." says Michael. It is clear that Michael's MS has not slowed him down - he has already conquered Muckfest Philly and plans to participate in Muckfest Baltimore!
Michael and his team of 25 friends, family and co-workers are ready to run and are looking forward to getting down and dirty as they conquer every obstacle in their way as they help create a world free of MS. MuckFest MS is a 5-mile mucky obstacle course that will challenge the most experienced athlete, as well as the fun loving adventure seeker. The event will take place on June 15th at Essex County South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ with the proceeds going to support critical MS research and programs and services for those living with the disease.
