Keynote address: "Hold that thought! Understanding and addressing the cognitive challenges in MS - an update on what we know" by Dr. Lauren Caruso
About the keynote speaker
Dr. Lauren Caruso is a clinical neuropsychologist who has specialized in MS for more than 20 years. After conducting clinical MS research in cognition and sleep disorders/fatigue for various funding agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for nearly 10 years, Dr. Caruso now works primarily in clinical settings to provide individualized cognitive assessments and rehabilitation programs for people living with MS in her NYC and Westchester offices.
Prior to starting her independent practice serving people living with MS, Dr. Caruso was the director of the Cognitive Division for the Multiple Sclerosis Research and Treatment Center and more recently, the International Multiple Sclerosis Management Practice. She also serves as a grant reviewer for various agencies, including the National Institutes of Health and the National MS Society, as well as an expert consultant for new research grant applications. She also sits on various committees that serve the MS population, such as the clinical advisory committee for the NYC - Southern NY Chapter. Dr. Caruso contributes to numerous publications addressing cognition and sleep disorders in MS, and is an invited guest speaker across the country for both professional and lay audiences. Her primary work objectives are to disseminate information on cognitive difficulties in MS, as well as advocate and provide individualized treatment for people living with MS.
Legislator of the Year Award recipient: Senator Thomas K. Duane
Senator Thomas K. Duane represents the 29th district of New York, and has sponsored many important pieces of legislation that would improve the well being of New Yorkers living with MS and other disabilities. He has given testimonies urging the prevention of rent increases, challenging Access-A-Ride cuts, and bringing accessible, affordable, high quality healthcare to all New Yorkers. Also, Senator Duane sponsored the recently passed legislation that prohibits the creation of specialty tiers in New York State and legislation that would have permitted individuals with severe and permanent disabilities to participate in the EPIC program and raise the income eligibility for those currently in the EPIC program.
