The chapter supports comprehensive care for people with MS and their families in affiliation with eight Centers for Comprehensive MS Care. The comprehensive care approach is appropriate and recommended for everyone, whether the disease takes a more benign course or you are managing more intensive symptoms and progression. Comprehensive care in MS ideally treats the whole person, not just the disease and its symptoms, and utilizes the most appropriate medications and interventions while focusing on the individual’s and family’s well-being and quality of life.
Specially trained nurses and social workers, along with an expert MS neurologist, offer integrated services as needed to the person with MS and his/her family. Services include ongoing quality-of-life assessments, intensive symptom management, referrals to rehabilitation services and other related specialists, disease education and treatment adherence support, and on-going assessment of psychosocial needs (including counseling and concrete social services).
