Day for Hispanic Families Living with MS took place on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Columbia University’s Italian Academy. We had record number of 147 people in attendance and 225 who showed enough interest to register!
The program featured a keynote presentation on MS Pain and its Treatment by Spanish speaking neurologist, Dr. Casilda Balmaceda, a panel of people affected by MS sharing their adaptations to the disease, a presentation by Dr. Maria Reyes-Velarde on Finding the Family’s Strength, performances by a latino comedian and a Puerto Rican bomba musical band-Los Plenarios de la 21 and, of course a delicious lunch with Latino foods. We also distributed tons of material about MS in Spanish and connected folks to our crisis services and support groups. For kids, we offered the MS Symptom Museum interactive activity, face painting, arts/crafts, and a Zumba dance class.
Attendees left with a wealth of knowledge and enjoyed a fun-filled day:
“According to my doctor, MS does not cause pain. Thanks to this presentation I have a much better understanding of what I have been experiencing and now I can make a better decision about keeping my doctor.”
“I am so glad that there are programs like this for the Spanish speaking community living with MS—thanks so much!”
“Now my kids have a better handle on what I am going through and we can talk more about it at home—thanks.”
“I had a great day---lots of fun—I loved the music and shared laughter!”
