Do you have a personal connection to MS?
I never understood MS at all until a friend was diagnosed a few years ago. I spent a great deal of time with this friend as she began her journey with MS and began to wrap her mind around a new sense of normal. Though a very strong woman by nature, the diagnosis and the initial symptoms were extremely trying for her. Moreso, understanding a complex disease like MS was difficult for her and everyone around her. Far too often then and now, you here "but you don't look sick." Most days, she's great. Some days are tough. But through my experiences with her I've learned a lot and I've been truly inspired. It's heartbreaking to see the struggles, but uplifting to see the positive that's come for her. She's taken the bull by the horns. She embraces the new journey and is living every day to inspire herself and others. It's truly incredible. So, I've seen MS as both a challenge and an unexpected gift for her.
Why did you decide to sign up for the Escape to the Lake Ride?
I've been hoping to do the ride for a couple of years now, but scheduling conflicts prevented me in the past. I have heard so many wonderful things of the festivities around the ride and I love cycling. Plus, it's all for a wonderful cause. How could I not sign up?!
What are you doing to train or prepare yourself for the Escape to the Lake ride?
I am a road biking enthusiast, so I ride every chance I get all summer. I've been spinning all winter to prepare for the real fun when the warm weather strikes!
Have you encountered any obstacles while preparing for the ride and how have you overcome them?
No obstacles here.
Being that you’re a first time rider, what advice would you offer that will encourage people to participate?
Sometimes new riders are intimidated by longer distances. I say, you can do anything. It's not a race, it's a fun ride for a great cause. So ride! Do it at your pace and stop whenever you need a break. The important thing is to enjoy the ride!
