Family and Social Programs

The Blue Ridge Chapter recognizes the importance of getting out and having fun!  This is why we offer family and social programs throughout the year. These events may be retreats, baseball games, holiday dinners, picnics, or other enjoyable ways to relax, socialize, and have fun. Some of our signature Chapter Programs include:

Weekend Escape: The Brian Mason Respite Camp
Weekend Escape is a 2-night, 3-day respite camp for people with MS and their families. The camp takes place in September on the weekend after Labor Day and is held at the Skelton 4-H Conference Center in Wirtz, VA. We provide a full healthcare staff and personal care assistance so caregivers get a break as well. It offers many recreational and educational opportunities and is a ton of fun!

MS Retreat at the Breaks
The MS Retreat at the Breaks is a 2-day retreat for people with MS and their families. It is held in May at Breaks Interstate Park, near Elkhorn City, KY on the Kentucky/ Virginia line.

Family Day in Charleston, WV
This is a fun day at the Clay Center in Charleston, WV. It is an opportunity for parents with MS and children to learn from one another about managing MS and family as well as enjoy all of the unique exhibits at the Discovery Museum.

Family Night at the Lynchburg Hillcats and the Salem Red Sox
Each Spring, the Chapter hosts a picnic at a minor league baseball game in Lynchburg, VA and in Salem, VA.  People with MS and their families and friends are invited to attend. These picnics are a great opportunity to meet people in your community and have a fun night out!  

Holiday Dinners in Martinsville and Winchester, VA and Parkersburg, WV
Each December the Chapter holds holidays dinners for people with MS and their families. These dinners are held at local eateries and are a festive way to enjoy the holidays.

Valentine's Dinners in Harrisonburg, VA and Huntington, WV
During the week of Valentine's Day, the Chapter celebrates by having a dinner for people with MS and their families.  These dinners are held at local restaurants and we offer door prizes and goodies to those who attend.  

Picnics in Bristol & Winchester, VA and in Fairmont, WV
During the late spring and early summer, the Chapter holds picnics in local parks. Typically, the main dish is provided and participants are asked to bring a dish to share. These picnics are fun, accessible ways to enjoy the company of others. Outdoor games and other festivities are encouraged!  

Couples Retreats
These 2 night-3 day retreats is designed specifically for couples facing the challenges of MS. During these innovative retreats, you and your spouse will learn about: couple enrichment and why it’s important, blocks to communication, communication danger signs, talking without fighting, talking with your partner about MS challenges, among other areas of interest.
