Motorcycle Marshal

As part of the Risk Management Team, the Motorcycle Marshals facilitate in the movement of groups of bicyclists to safely progress through the route to the Finish Line each day. Motor Marshals communicate, through Net Control, safety and/or operational issues; communicate to cyclists possible road hazards and/or course changes. A successful  Motorcycle Marshal will complete an introductory two-hour training course on the role and operational procedures.

Motorcycle Marshals serve under the leadership of the Motorcycle Marshal Chair and his Advisory Staff . Volunteers receive regular emails and phone calls on training opportunities and upcoming events. Motorcycle Marshal volunteers are required to take: at least one classroom training session; at least one pre-event training ride; participate at least one day of the Bike MS Valero ride; and Motorcycle Marshals will be required to pass a DMV check.

Qualifications:  

  • Motorcycle Marshals must have a valid motorcycle driver’s license and proof of insurance covering the motorcycle to be ridden.  
  • The Motorcycle Marshal also must sign a Volunteer Form.
  • Like the bicycle riders, all Motorcycle Safety Marshals are required to wear helmets.
  • Even though it is not required, it is strongly recommended that all Motorcycle Marshals be active amateur radio operators with VHF/UHF ham radio capability on the motorcycle and a cellular phone for backup communications.  
  • CPR and first aid training is desirable, but not mandatory. CPR and/or first aid training opportunities are available throughout the year.
