Winter 2012 Spotlight-Annual Meeting Award Winners (Mei Ling Perkins, Bob Banach, Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group, Susan Teabout)

Each year, the Chapter honors those who have made a diff erence in our community by presenting a Champion of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Corporate Service Award and Make Your Mark Award. Congratulations to this wonderful group of people.

CHAMPION OF THE YEAR: MEI LING PERKINS

Mei Ling Perkins - Champion of the Year2.jpgMei Ling was diagnosed with MS in 2007 and immediately contacted the Chapter to get involved. The Walks were right around the corner, so she registered with a team of four called Fortune’s Cookie. Each year, Mei Ling has become more and more involved with the Chapter building her Walk team, raising funds through “Mu Shu for MS” and getting her family restaurant, Forbidden City, to become the Food Finish sponsor for the Mt. Trashmore Walk starting in 2009 and then the Mariners’ Museum Walk starting in 2011. She even became a part of Walk MS Committee in 2010.

In 2010, Mei Ling became friends with Marine and Bike MS cyclist Tom Kulisz. As a result Mei Ling became involved with Bike MS. In 2012 we lost our Saturday Bike MS cookout sponsor. True to form, Mei Ling jumped in and offered to sponsor the cookout. She has already let us know Forbidden City will be back as the cookout sponsor in 2013. Now Mei Ling has purchased a bike and is registered to ride in 2013.

We are truly fortunate to have Mei Ling Perkins as part of our family! Th ank you Mei Ling for your generous support of the Chapter.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: BOB BANACH

Bob had always been blessed with good health - so twelve years ago Bob made the decision to givBob Banach - Vounteer of the Year2.jpge back to the community and help those in need. He looked into different causes and their organizations and decided to volunteer for the
National MS Society at the 2001 MS 150 Bike Tour. It was such a rewarding experience that he decided to volunteer at the next event and he has been with us ever since.

Bob enjoys the diversity that volunteering for the Chapter gives him. This is good, because we have Walks, Bike MS and Stair Climb MS and Bob volunteers at them all! In 2012 he took over the reins of Bike MS Logistics Coordinator. Bob also finds the time to serve on our Bike MS Event Committee and help in the counting rooms after our Walks. Bob finds his
involvement with the Chapter very rewarding. He has volunteered for other organizations, but there is no comparison.

We were honored to recognize Bob Banach for his dedication and commitment to the Chapter. Thank you so much Bob for all you do!

CORPORATE SERVICE AWARD: ATLANTIC BAY MORTGAGE GROUP

ab2This year’s Corporate Service Award recognizes a company that has been a friend to the National MS Society since 1999. The relationship with Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group started at the Blue Ridge Chapter when the son of an Atlantic Bay manager was diagnosed with MS. Then in 2001 CEO, Brian Mason, was diagnosed. So Atlantic Bay extended its support, becoming a statewide Walk sponsor. Since that day, they have contributed close to $70,000 in sponsorship to the Chapter’s Walk MS.

In addition, Atlantic Bay encouraged their branches throughout the state to form local Walk teams. The Virginia Beach office started the Atlantic Bay Southsiders in 2002 and they have raised over $44,000 for Walk MS. In 2007, local Marketing Director, Gary Hudgins, took over as Team Captain and grew the team by leaps and bounds. Creative fundraising was
encouraged and donations increased each year.

In 2011, local Atlantic Bay president, Brian Holland, joined the Chapter Board of Directors. Brian has been an active member donating items for Silent Auctions and sponsoring our premier events for the past two years.

Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group has a strong commitment and involvement in their community and we appreciate their generous support!

MAKE YOUR MARK AWARD: SUSAN TEABOUT

The “Make Your Mark” Award is an annual award given to the person who has made a big impact on MS Awareness.Susan Teabout - Make Your Mark Award2.jpg
In 2002, Susan was diagnosed with MS. At the time of her diagnosis, she was President of Delta Connection Academy. She managed 5 pilot training locations and contracts for airline pilot training with airlines around the world. Because her MS progressed so quickly, she left Delta Air Lines in 2005.

Susan believes life is made of defining moments and leaving her dream career due to MS was clearly one of those “moments.” She was amazed at the number of people who came forward telling her they or a family member lives with
MS. Susan noticed that one very common and sad theme emerged. Most could not aff ord the high cost of the MS drugs which can cost up to $40,000 annually.

Armed with spreadsheets outlining her annual medical costs and mileage to doctors and the pharmacy, as well as information on the Chapter’s legislative platform, Susan has continuously volunteered her time and energy
to meet with legislators in their districts. She attended the 2011 Virginia Legislative Action Day put on by the Chapter. Whenever we need someone to share their story about living with MS and the high out-of-pocket cost of prescription drugs, Susan is more than willing to do so.

We can’t thank Susan enough for all she has done and is committed to do for others living with MS!

Fall 2012 Spotlight- Debbie Smith

debbie smithDebbie Smith does not let MS slow her down. A devoted Bike MS Volunteer Coordinator, Self Help Group Co-Leader, Movement Ambassador, and MS Activist, Debbie is very involved with the Hampton Roads Chapter. You can always count on her to lend a helping hand and get the job done.

Because of her former management experience, Debbie became engaged in helping with Volunteer Management for our bike MS weekend. She makes sure the event is fully manned with volunteers from the Start to the Finish, from rest stops to our overnight camp and everywhere in between. She has taken on this daunting job with enthusiasm and she does it well. In addition, she sits on the Bike MS Event Committee throughout the year to help organize and plan the event.

Debbie also has a talent for lifting other’s spirits. She is the type of person you don’t forget once you meet her. Th erefore, Self Help Group Leader Margie Cortimilia willingly took Debbie up on her offer to help her Co-Lead our Chesapeake Self Help Group. In this role, Debbie assists in making sure the group’s meetings are fi lled with great information, uplifting conversations, and support.

Outside of the group, Debbie continues to spread her positive attitude as she represents the National MS Society as a Movement Ambassador. At Chapter events and programs, as well as community health fairs, Debbie is often found at the Mission Table talking to people about MS and her experience. She takes it upon herself to attend several seminars and programs throughout the year to educate herself and feels it is important to share her knowledge, story and positive attitude with others.

But Debbie doesn’t stop there, she also advocates for those with MS at the local and state level. As an MS Activist for the Chapter, she has traveled to Richmond for MS Legislative Action Day and met with legislators about the importance of aff ordable medications, housing, and transportation.

The Hampton Roads Chapter is truly grateful for all that Debbie Smith does. She is a true friend of the Chapter. Thank you Debbie for all your hard work!

Summer 2012 Spotlight- Tom Kulisztom kulisz2

Tom Kulisz came to the Hampton Roads Chapter by order from his commanding officer
in the Marines. He knew Tom was into physical fitness and “suggested” that Tom join his Bike MS Team Leatherneck NMITC in 2010, ride over 150 miles and fundraise. Tom said “sure - happy to do it”. Little did he know that he would be asked to attend the 2010 National Conference in Chicago by the Chapter and then asked to be the Team Captain of Leatherneck NMITC in 2011. At the National Conference, life changed for Tom. He met Mei Ling Perkins, a Hampton Roads Chapter Walk MS Top Fundraiser and client, and they became fast friends. Tom also learned about the MS Great 8 Ride- a cycling adventure beginning in Massachusetts and ending in Washington DC. Tom came away from the National Conference with a passion to do something about MS now and a commitment to the mission of the Society and the Hampton Roads Chapter.

Tom decided he could do more and became involved on a different level – as a Volunteer. He became a part of the Bike MS and Walk MS Committees. He volunteered as Logistics Coordinator at all 3 Walks in 2011 and at the inaugural Stair Climb MS in September 2011. Tom was everywhere! He even rode in Bike MS 2011, but he wasn’t quite himself. In fact, he was Tinkerbell. Because of a bet with Mei Ling Perkins, Tom agreed to wear a costume of her choosing if she helped him raise the tom kulisz3$5000 needed to ride in the Great 8. She did and Tom wore the Tinkerbell costume on Saturday at Bike MS. Tom is a great sport! We can’t wait to see what he will wear this year!

Tom has continued to be involved with the Chapter in 2012. He again served as the Logistics Coordinator at the Walks in April. We will be very sad to see him go when he is transferred to Camp Jejune, North Carolina in July 2012. He promises to stay in touch and involved with the Chapter. Thank you Tom Kulisz for your dedication to the Hampton Roads Chapter!

Spring 2012 Spotlight-Rick Powell

Rick Powell2Every year the Hampton Roads Chapter honors volunteers that have truly made a difference in the lives of those affected by MS and in their community. Anyone can make their mark, but it takes a special person to be as dedicated as Rick Powell. Therefore, we were honored to present him with the “Make Your Mark” award for 2011 at our Annual Meeting.

When Sharon Grossman became Chapter President in 1980, she heard that the Minnesota Chapter held a fundraising bike ride. She figured, why not try it here! Rick, who had recently been diagnosed, was an avid cyclist and together they launched the Hampton Roads Chapter’s first bike ride! Back then, fewer than 100 cyclists participated in Bike MS! Fast forward to today. The event now raises over a half a million dollars and approximately 600 cyclists and 200 volunteers participate annually! Rick’s initial work connecting the chapter to the Tidewater Bicycling Association and the local bike shops helped to make Bike MS the region’s premier cycling event. And where is Rick every year
during Bike MS ? He is either riding his bike or volunteering.

While Rick’s passion was cycling, he has become more involved with the chapter over the years. Recently, he became a Movement Ambassador and has attended speaking engagements on behalf of the chapter. His knowledge of the disease, how it can progress, and the research that is in the pipeline makes him the perfect ambassador.Rick Powell 3

Rick volunteers at all of the Chapter’s events. At our Walks and Stair Climb, you’ll find him at the Mission Table talking to people about the advances in research and living with MS. During MS Awareness Week, he’s out at Flag Down MS helping us build the display of 2,800 flags- one for every person living with MS in Hampton Roads.

If Hampton Roads had to put a face on MS, it would be Rick’s. Even though he has a progressive form of MS, he continues to give back and stay positive. It is difficult to put into words how grateful the chapter truly is.

Fall 2011 Spotlight- Our Tuesday Morning Ladies (Charletta Horne-Tanner, Shirley McClaskey, Barbara Sims, Patti Sutliff, and June Sylvera)

As some of you know, the Hampton Roads Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Tuesday Ladies 1Society has only 5 Staff members and 1 Intern. How are we able to accomplish so much?! volunteers!! Each and every volunteer is essential in helping us create a world free of MS, but the Group of Tuesday Morning Ladies hold an extra special place in our hearts. Their commitment is year round.

They meet almost every Tuesday around 9:30 am in the work room of our Chapter office. They set to work on all those great mailings you receive. They print, fold, stuff, tab and label each and every piece of mail. Some mailings are just a couple of hundred, but some are in the thousands. They steadily work chatting away amongst each other and with us. They get it all done and then ask “what else can we do?” They do it all!!

The Tuesday Morning Ladies has evolved into a group of five wonderful ladies – each with a connection to MS. Some weeks we get all 5 ladies in the office and some weeks it is just two. However many, we are always thankful.

Tuesday Ladies2The leader of the Tuesday Morning Ladies or CEO (as they affectionately call her) is Shirley McClaskey. She has earned this position through 22 years of dedicated service to the Hampton Roads Chapter. Shirley has been here for all 22 of our Walk MS. She often helps us out in the Counting Rooms at both Walk MS and Bike MS too. Shirley is an amazing woman and very special to all of us at the Chapter.

Shirley is supported by four wonderful ladies that make it all work on Tuesdays. They are: June Sylvera, Barbara Sims, Patti Sutliff and our newest member, Charletta Horne-Tanner. We are so happy to have each and every one of them and hope they will continue to support the Chapter for many years to come!!

Summer 2011 Spotlight-The Entire Bike MS EMS Team (Mike Carden, Dave Seitz, Bobby Matthews, Gerald Dermandy, Jason Thurston, Shane Lyle, and Alice Olenik)

Imagine riding in our Bike MS event on the Eastern Bobby Matthews 2Shore. It’s a beautiful late spring day, the sun is out but hielded by a few clouds and it’s a perfect 75 degrees with no wind. Suddenly, your rear bicycle tire is touched by the cyclist’s front tire who is drafting behind you. And down you go! Of course, all of you cyclists know that drafting and pace lines are not permitted on the Bike MS Ride! Fortunately, there is a dedicated group of gentlemen- with the help of some ladies - to perform first aid and help you continue (or not) on the ride.

This group not only commits to a three-day weekend every year for Bike MS, but they take an active role in our Bike Committee helping plan the safest ride possible. Year after year,
they replenish the first aid kits, help determine proper procedures of protocol, load supply
trucks, monitor the bike route for cyclists in need of emergency medical treatment, as well  as handle dehydration, muscle injuries, bee stings and road rash. Of course, they also perform beautifully in the Saturday Evening Program as Hula Girls and Village People!

Ovol1ur medics are essential to a successful event. We are proud to say that we have a strong core group that we know we can depend on. Their professionalism and expertise is appreciated by the chapter staff and those who have had to rely on their services.

We are grateful to the entire EMS team: Mike Carden, Dave Seitz, Bobby Matthews, Gerald
Dermandy, Jason Thurston, Shane Lyle and Alice Olenik. Thanks to Mike Carden for taking the lead role decades ago and putting together such an amazing team!

Spring 2011 Spotlight-Donna Utsunomiya

It was 1994: Tom Hanks wins Best Actor for Philadelphia; Holly Donna U-Volunteer SpotlightHunter wins Best Actress for The Piano and Donna Utsunomiya participates in Walk MS for the first time! She’s the team captain for INRIans- a corporate team established to support a co-worker diagnosed with MS. But Donna is more than a team captain. She is a top fundraiser!

Ever since 1994, Donna has been one of our top five fundraisers for Walk MS. Back then, the Hampton Roads Chapter only had one walk site! When we added a second site in 1996 on the Peninsula, Donna and her team were thrilled since they all lived there. The INRIans made the Peninsula Walk MS location their “home turf” returning year after year, always earning team fundraising awards.

Creative fundraising for MS is Donna’s passion. Year-round, she organizes yard sales with all of the proceeds benefitting Walk MS. Originally, Donna would hold sales as she accumulated enough of her own items and averaged about $2,000 a year. However, in 2010, friends and neighbors pitched in and her yard sales raised over $5,000! One year, Donna created a cookbook to sell. She received approval from Wal-Mart to solicit customers. So, Donna dressed up in some attention-getting garb with her cookbooks on a table, informing people of MS and collecting donations. Donna is a talented knitter, too! Each year she knits a baby blanket or two and auctions them off. In 2009 and 2010, she brought blankets to the National Conference and collected $100!

“My best advice for fund-raising would be to do it all year long and ask everyone you deal with for a donation,” suggests Donna. “I don’t think many people think to ask their dentist, hair dresser, etc. for donations. My vet in Virginia still gives me $100 every year! Plus, I am always looking for new ways to raise money!!!”

A few years back, Donna announced she was moving to Nevada. We were heart-broken. Because Donna continuously earned her way to National Conferences, we were privileged to get to know her personally. Imagining a Peninsula Walk MS without her was disappointing….until she announced that she promised to return each year to her “home turf”! And she has kept her promise! Since 1994, Donna has raised more the $60,000. Her dedication to the MS Community in Hampton Roads is unwavering.

She is a true inspiration!

December 2010 Spotlight-Annual Meeting Award Winners (Damon Radcliffe, Forbidden City, James Smith, Teresa Crowson)

Each year, the Hampton Roads Chapter hosts an annual meeting to reflect on the past year’s successes and challenges, as well as to present fundraising awards and honor those who have made a difference in the world of MS. Four honorary awards were presented at the Westin Town Center on October 28, 2010: Corporate Service, Outstanding Committee Member, Volunteer of the Year, and the Make Your Mark Awards. Congratulations to this wonderful group of people who selflessly put people with MS in the forefront of their lives.

Damon Radcliffe received the Outstanding Committee Member Award. Damon registered to ride with “Heroes Live Forever” bike team… but volunteered to damonwork security at Camp Silver Beach instead! He has graciously continued in this role ever since.

In 2009, when we organized our first Challenge Walk in the Historic Triangle, we learned that Damon grew up in the Yorktown/Williamsburg area and had many contacts. He helped to secure the College of William and Mary for our final mile and finish! The college staff knew and respected Damon, so they were happy to accommodate his request on the chapter’s behalf.

All of Damon’s assistance landed him an official spot on the Challenge Walk Committee. Using all of his contacts, he worked to improve the Sunday route, informed the local police departments of our event, and provided a generator for our use at the pre-finish. Thanks Damon!

forbidden cityThis year’s Corporate Service Award was awarded to Forbidden City who originally
started the team Fortune’s Cookie for Walk MS because the owners’ daughter was
diagnosed with MS just a month prior to the 2007 event date. In their second year participating, Forbidden City hosted “Mu Shu for MS” where 100% of the proceeds were donated to the Walk MS. This annual fundraiser continues to grow in attendance and in donations! But that was not enough for John and Emily Crell, Forbidden City owners. The Crell’s believed they could provide a more memorable Walk MS experience for participants by donating Chinese Food, so they did! Forbidden City signed on as the food sponsor for the 2009 Mt. Trashmore Walk MS event treating participants and volunteers to a fabulous meal! The sponsorship was duplicated in 2010 and this year Forbidden City also hosted the Walk MS Team Captains’ Rally.

In addition to supporting our walk, Forbidden City generously donated as a Bronze Sponsor to the first annual Moscow Ballet Benefit Performance of the Great Russian Nutcracker that was held in December 2009 at the Sandler Center. The event was such crowd pleaser that they decided to increase their donation to a Silver
Sponsorship this year!

If you ever enjoy lunch or dinner at Forbidden City in Virginia Beach make sure to thank them for their generosity!

The 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award goes to James Smith: a familiar face to the Hampton Roads Chapter since 1998 when he began participating as a cyclist in our Bike MS event. James not only raises the james smithminimum, but achieves Thousandaire Status each year he participates; whether as cyclist or a volunteer.

In 2007, James was participating in Dominion Power’s Volunteer Program and contacted the chapter to see if we needed volunteers. While reorganizing our event supply room, he found the map outlining our Eastern Shore bike routes and decided that’s where he wanted to help! James redesigned cue sheets and tweaked the routes, making them more efficient and easier for our route medics, support teams and cyclists alike. He also worked as a Bike MS Crew member that year driving one of our three supply trucks, and witnessing the behind the scenes action for the first time. James joined the Bike Event Committee in 2009 as our Route Manager and continues to make improvements.

Because of his position as an engineer working for Dominion Virginia Power in Electric Distribution Reliability, Bike MS 2011 will feature a junior Dominion Power Command Center that will house a special team, hand-picked by James, to monitor the ride and deal effectively and efficiently with any issue that might arise.

Thank you James for all the many hours of serious, dedicated work you have committed to Bike MS.

teresa crowson2The “Make Your Mark” Award is an annual award given to the person who has made the biggest impact on MS Awareness over the past year. The 2010 Award was presented to Teresa Crowson.

In 2007, Teresa created the Walk MS team, “On the Flip Side.” Teresa recruited 31 team members and raised $5,239! In three years, the team has raised $12,730! As a result of her hard work she was invited to the National Team Captains’ Rally in 2008 in Chicago.

Teresa is not only a fabulous team captain, but is also a member of the Government Relations Committee and attends the Public Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. and Lobby Day in Richmond advocating on behalf of those living with MS in Hampton Roads.

This year, the Historic Williamsburg Challenge Walk MS became a Crowson family affair!
Teresa’s husband Doug serves as the Medic Support Manager on the planning committee. Teresa joined the committee and secured enough wine for two opening night receptions. Teresa’s daughter, Blake, joined in with her Warwick High School Field Hockey Team to volunteer along the route and to cheer on the walkers as they completed their journey. Next year, Teresa and Blake plan to walk! Teresa, we can’t thank you enough for all you have done and have committed to do for others living with MS.

The Hampton Roads Chapter truly appreciates all of our dedicated volunteers. If you have free time during the week, we can use your help in office. We often have mailings that need to be prepared and events like the Bike MS, Challenge Walk MS, and Walk MS we need to gear up for. Volunteers are essential to our success! The movement begins here!

Fall 2010 Spotlight-Mei Ling Perkins

The Hampton Roads Chapter is blessed with a core group of volunteers dedicated to mei ling creating a world free of MS. We rely on them in many ways: to make our fundraising events run smoothly; to prepare mailings; to lobby government officials to support the Society’s advocacy platforms; to attend speaking engagements and health fairs on behalf of the Hampton Roads Chapter; and to help raise much needed funds for research as well local programs and services. Mei Ling Perkins performs many of these tasks… and not because we ask. Because she volunteers.

Mei Ling refers to her MS as a journey. She began feeling numbness in her right hand that spread to half way across her torso; from her shoulder down to her hip. After MRI’s and spinal taps, Mei Ling was eventually diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting MS in 2007. Her diagnosis made sense. The more she learned about multiple sclerosis, the more she realized she had been experiencing symptoms since childhood. Mei Ling  immediately contacted the Hampton Roads Chapter to get involved! True to herself, she approached this obstacle like all others she encounters- with a vengeance!

Mei Ling was diagnosed just weeks before Walk MS 2007. Realizing that she could begin doing something about MS immediately, she registered for the event with a team of four people who called themselves Fortune’s Cookie. In that short time, the team raised over $2,700 earning a Silver Team Award. We knew she was a rising star! This was just the beginning of what would become a rewarding relationship between Mei Ling, her family and the Hampton Roads Chapter. It’s a relationship that we are fortunate to have.

Mei Ling’s fundraising history for the chapter has been quite spectacular! In 2008, Mei Ling became a member of the Chapter’s Mission Possible Club by personally raising $6,538 and her team won the Platinum Team Award raising $7,413. Last year, Mei Ling became the number one individual fundraiser for Walk MS bringing in $8,684 and Fortune’s Cookie was rated the number one team raising $10,135. The team’s claim to fame? “Mu Shu for MS”!

If you like Chinese food and live in Virginia Beach, you may have met Mei Ling and her family at their restaurant, Forbidden City. She is very involved running the restaurant. Forbidden City has taken on a very active role of supporting those with MS. The week prior to Walk MS, Forbidden City hosts “Mu Shu for MS”, an annual fundraiser for the team. The entire restaurant supports the efforts with servers donating their tips and all proceeds from the evening going to the team. In 2009, Forbidden City signed on as the food sponsor for the Mt. Trashmore Walk MS event treating participants and volunteers
to a fabulous meal! We’re pleased to announce that they’ll be returning as a sponsor for our 2010 Walk as the Mt. Trashmore food sponsor and the Walk MS Team Captains’ Rally sponsor. In addition to supporting our walk, Forbidden City generously donated to the first annual Moscow Ballet Benefit Performance of the Great Russian Nutcracker that was held in December2009 at the Sandler Center.

Mei Ling believes she can contribute much more than fundraising. Our Walk MS radio sponsor, 94.9 The Point hosts a weekly show dedicated to community topics. When the chapter was invited to be guests of the show, we called on Mei Ling. She graciously volunteered to tell her story and to promote the event. But she’s not just a radio talent! Mei Ling jumped at the chance to appear on a Sunday morning TV news program with her Yorkie-Poo, Piper, to promote Walk MS and the Canine Costume Contest. Piper won for
Cutest Costume that year!

Continuing to find ways to “Join the Movement,” Mei Ling joined the team of Movement Ambassadors. Movement Ambassadors are people who want to do something now to end MS and are passionate about engaging their community in the movement. They represent the National MS Society’s movement for a world free of MS by sharing their knowledge about chapter programs and fundraising events, as well as MS research
and advocacy.

As a trained spokesperson for the chapter and Society, Mei Ling has the opportunity to increase the capacity of the chapter moving the Society closer to achieving the mission. She also plays a critical role in communicating the availability of vital chapter programs and services to people with MS and their families. In her short tenure as an ambassador, she has attended several health fairs and fundraisers to speak on behalf of the chapter.

This year, Mei Ling joined the Walk MS Planning Committee for our October 2 walk at the Peninsula Town Center and the October 3 walk at Mt. Trashmore. She has been instrumental in soliciting sponsorships and spreading the word!

We are lucky to have Mei Ling Perkins as a member of the Hampton Roads Chapter family! Come on out to Walk MS on October 3 at Mt. Trashmore to meet Mei Ling and thank her for her dedication to help create a world free of MS!

Summer 2010 Spotlight-John McKee

John McKee gets around, just like in the old Beach Boys song “I Get Around.” The Strip he
drives up and down is the Bike MS route on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, eyes open for any cyclists in need. This is exactly where you will find him the weekend of June 5 & 6, john mckee2010 along with his co-pilot and wife, Romelda. His vehicle is loaded with water, sports drinks, snacks, sun screen and bug spray, but most importantly the knowledge of how to do quick repairs to a disabled bike or the offer of an air-conditioned ride to the next Rest Stop along the route.

A Naval Aviator from 1955 – 1975, John is used to working with a co-pilot and “getting
the job done.” As our Support and Gear (SAG) Coordinator, John organizes and directs his team of SAG Drivers, instructing them by phone and radio as to where on the route they are needed. His coordination of the SAG’s operates like a military campaign, much to the relief of any cyclist that is just too tired to cycle another mile. Many times just riding down the road a few miles in one of the air conditioned support vehicles is all the cyclist needs to get back in the game.

John understands this well having been a cyclist since 1963. It was in 1974 due to a Navy workday lunch exercise program that he became a serious cyclist. Suggested exercise choices were running, swimming or cycling. He chose cycling and soon realized how he much enjoyed it. Soon after starting the program, John was cycling from his Kempsville home to the Norfolk Naval Base twice a week. As he gained experience and lost weight, his commute decreased from 1hour 15 minutes to only 45 minutes! John later joined the Tidewater Bicycling Association serving as Tour Vice-President and two terms as the club’s President. Still in the saddle, John not only rides with other cyclists several times a week but will be participating in racing time trials this year, too.

It was in 2004 that John joined the SAG Team for Bike MS. In 2006 he became the SAG
Coordinator. Although this is his 7th year participating in this important volunteer
position, we don’t think he will suffer from the “Seven Year Itch”. Thanks John and your Team of SAG vehicles for a job well done!

Spring 2010 Spotlight-Teresa Crowson

Teresa Crowson

In April of 2006, Teresa Crowson experienced symptoms such as facial pain and numbness, spasticity, muscle twitches, and heat sensitivity. After five MRI’s in seven months, Teresa was diagnosed with “clinically probable MS.”   By then, the 2006 Walk MS event had passed, so the Hampton Roads Chapter had to wait a year before meeting this exceptional woman.

In 2007, Teresa created the Walk MS team, “On the Flip Side.” Teresa recruited 31 team members and raised $5,239! In three years, the team has raised $11,189! As a result of her hard work she was invited to the National Team Captains’ Rally in 2008 in Chicago. This was a turning point for Teresa.

Because she was diagnosed with “clinically probable MS,” she was not taking any disease-modifying drugs to slow her progression. After returning from the rally, Teresa had an appointment with her neurologist and her diagnosis had not changed- neither had her symptoms. She was about to leave when she remembered what she had learned in Chicago: BE BOLD! Teresa sat back down and advocated for herself. She is now on a therapy and her symptoms are minimal.

Teresa is not only a fabulous team captain, but is also a member of the Government Relations Committee and attends the Public Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. and Lobby Day in Richmond advocating on behalf of those living with MS in Hampton Roads. You may recognize Teresa from the front page of the Daily Press when she was interviewed about health care reform.

We even recruited Doug Crowson, Teresa’s husband, to work on the first Historic Williamsburg ChallengeWalk MS! Doug served as the Medic Support Manager on the planning committee. He recruited medics to patrol the route ensuring a safe walk for our participants.

Many thanks to the Crowson Family for the dedication and activism in the fight against MS! We hope they continue to BE BOLD!
