Self Advocacy and Social Security Disability Insurance

This information is designed to help people with multiple sclerosis engage in self advocacy around Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) issues. Effective self advocacy in this area can help you obtain the SSDI or SSI benefits to which you are entitled.

To advocate successfully, you must show that your MS causes disability severe enough to prevent you from working. You must be able to present yourself not as the competent worker you once were but as a person who can no longer perform substantial gainful activity, as that term is defined by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Topics include:

  • Research tips and resources
  • How to work with your doctor proactively
  • Preparing your application
  • Handling an in-person interview
  • How to find additional assistance
