Moving Forward Film Festival Debuts in Second Life for MS Awareness Week

In-World Debut:
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 12:00 noon PT/1 MT/2 CT/3 ET

This past summer, the National MS Society posted a call for entries for people to tell their story about how they are living with or impacted by MS and moving their lives forward. Over 100 people submitted proposals for consideration.

From those initial proposals, a judges’ panel of people with MS in the film and entertainment industry reviewed submissions and selected the five finalists. Each finalist was paired with a production company and worked collaboratively with the production team and panel to produce the 5-7 minute films shown at the Society's national conference in October 2007.

The Moving Forward Film Festival will make its in-world debut in Second Life on Wednesday, March 12th at 12:00 noon PT/1 MT/2 CT/3 ET in celebration of MS Awareness Week, March 10 – 17, 2008. The Film Festival will be shown at the “MS Society” pavilion. To participate, teleport to this “MS Society” location. Make sure you have checked the little box that says “include parcels with mature content.” (This only means that you are searching the entire SL database, not going to mature zones!)

New to Second Life?

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely created by its Residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe.

Want to explore this virtual world and be a part of the Moving Forward Film Festival debut? Follow these steps prior to Wednesday, March 12th:

First, a few easy steps to create an Avatar and log in to Second Life.

  1. Visit the New Membership page at www.secondlife.com and choose “Join Now- Membership is Free” link. Follow prompts to fill in account information.
  2. Once you create the account, visit the Download page and download the Second Life installer. It's best to save it somewhere easy, such as your Desktop.
  3. Run the installer program you downloaded, to install Second Life on your computer.
  4. When the Second Life client software is installed, open the green "Second Life" icon to start the program. At the login screen, enter the Second Life account first and last name and your account password, then click Log In!
  5. Once the application has loaded, you will find yourself standing on the ground with other people walking or floating around. Toward the gate in the enclosure you will look for a Second Life logo. When you left-mouse click on the sign, you will get a notecard giving you the basics about how to move – arrow keys for directions. You can either use your keyboard’s arrow keys or press “NumLock” to use the keypad. You are in a designated place in Second Life for beginners, so don’t worry about doing anything wrong, the other Avatars around you are probably new users.
