Name: Joe Piper
When I Joined the Movement: About eight years ago, after my late brother was diagnosed.
Occupation: Life sciences venture capitalist
Hobbies: My kids, basketball, woodworking and art. I did a lot of the paintings that are in our offices.
What movement means to me: Two things: the ability to get around and go places and do things; and people’s passionate desire to prevent and cure MS.
One thing I’ve learned about MS that I want to tell you: I think people are a little naïve about the magnitude of the financial resources it will take to cure MS.
What I’ve done to Join the Movement: I co-founded an MS Hub in a local hospital, a one-stop-shopping model where people with MS can get all the services they need under one roof. I helped put together Fast Forward, a new way to move promising therapies into clinical trials. And, my wife and I are super-involved in Bike MS. Our team, Piper’s Peddlers, raised $35,000 last year.
My artistic influences: Picasso and that Dutch guy with the ear missing. Oh yeah, Van Gogh.
What I’m doing: I’ll be in the state capital talking to legislators about some of the Society’s initiatives.
