Speedbumps: Flooring It Through Hollywood
by Teri Garr
Publisher: Hudson Street Press, 2005
At once laugh-out-loud funny and remarkably down to earth, the popular Oscar-nominated actress muses about movies, men, motherhood and MS in a book that is both Hollywood hilarious and personally moving.
by Jacob Wascalus for InsideMS, June 2006
Although the details of her life can be disorienting at times, Teri Garr displays a sharp comic sense as she peppers Speedbumps with anecdotes of fun and folly. But as her MS symptoms slowly emerged, she began to focus on her current role as an advocate for raising awareness about MS.
Garr thinks of MS this way: "[It's] an annoyance that I've learned to live with, like bunions. It may not be pleasant, but it's a part of who I am."
Speedbumps is an enjoyable read, and Garr's meditations on having MS resonate with anyone who's experienced the onset and management of the disease—so much so that identifying with a famous Hollywood actress isn't difficult at all.
