Supporting MS Research is a Marathon, Not a Sprint, for Indian Superstar

Milind SomanBorn in Scotland, but raised primarily in India, Milind Soman, 43, is an Indian icon. In addition to being a national swimming champion as well as a qualified electrical engineer, Milind is one of the most famous men in all India as a result of his highly successful modeling career. Milind is also an actor, appearing in numerous television programs and movies, making him instantly recognizable to millions of people. With a partner, Milind is also the owner of a lifestyle and fitness brand called BREATHE, launched in January 2009.

In addition to his many business and entertainment pursuits, Milind is a dedicated supporter of multiple sclerosis (MS) education and research, though he personally is not directly affected by the disease, himself. It is estimated that more than 30,000 people in India and more than 2.1 million people worldwide live with MS.

Though countries closer to the equator, such as India, tend to have fewer cases of MS, there is a great need to raise the profile of MS in India for those who have been, and those who will be, diagnosed with the disease. Milind participates in sponsored half marathon races, such as the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. In fact, he has been running races to support the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI) for more than 10 years.

"I aspire to improve the quality of life for persons with MS all over the world so that they will be able to live a life of dignity," said Milind Soman. "I support and always run for the MS cause because it is important and I care to make a difference."

The MSSI can count on Milind to lend his fame (and personal financial support) to the cause regularly. For example, he appears at annual Walk MS events and visits individual patients. And while Milind is not a professional runner, he continues to train and race in support of MS education and research. In February 2009, Milind amazingly ran 60km in a 24 hour period for the NDTV Greenathon charity fund raiser in Mumbai. In May 2009, Milind ran the Sunfeast World 10K Run, raising significant funds for the MS cause.

"Sometimes something just touches your heart and leaves an impression for a lifetime. That’s exactly what happened with Milind Soman when he met the first person with MS," said Geeta Mirchandani, MS Society of India. "This life altering response for Milind got translated into a social commitment which symbolized his unbridled energy and limitless enthusiasm. He believes in joy of giving which enhances the beauty of living ! "

What’s next for Milind? Milind will run the prestigious ING NY Marathon this November 1 in New York City.
