Hear a special research conference call focusing on the Nervous System Repair and Protection (NSRP) Initiative. The call, held Jan. 22, 2009, features Dr. Patricia O’Looney, Vice President of Biomedical Research at the Society, and Drs. Gavin Giovannoni and Douglas Kerr, leading researchers working on two of the NSRP projects.

Giovannoni

Dr. Gavin Giovannoni (Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry) is the principal investigator of a team attempting to turn cells into vehicles that will deliver repair molecules to sites of injury in the brain, and screening molecules for their protective properties as a prelude to clinical trials.

Dr. Douglas Kerr (Johns Hopkins University) is a senior scientist working on the investigative team headed by Johns Hopkins University colleague Peter Calabresi, MD. This team is searching for better ways to detect and quantify nerve fiber injury in MS and testing agents that may protect the nervous system from further damage.

Dr. Patricia O' Looney (National MS Society) is Vice President of Biomedical Research at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Dr. O'Looney directs and oversees the administration of the Society’s biomedical research funding programs.
