We hear all too often that the economic consequences of MS delays or prevents qualified students from attending college. For those diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, there are very few known sources of scholarship assistance specially targeted for these families.
The challenges of living with MS make funding a college education hard.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society strongly believes that MS shouldn’t stand in the way of an education. This is why the scholarship program exists ― to help highly qualified students achieve their academic potential.
The Society established its scholarship program in 2003, and the program continues to grow both in terms of support and scholarships awarded. In its first year of operation the program awarded 36 scholarships for a total of $68,000; in 2007 we awarded $700,440 to 332 students, with awards ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. An additional $21,000 was awarded to the two top scholars as four-year awards.
The review process for the 2008 Scholarship Program is complete. We received 1000 applications and awarded 421 new scholarships, plus 72 renewals, for a total of 493 scholarships. The awards totaled $1,223,750. In addition to the one-year scholarships awarded, we were also able to pledge 58 four-year scholarships.
Funding for the scholarships comes from foundations, chapter donors and our own employee giving program.
