Advanced MRI Scanners May Be Just as Effective Without Dye, Says New Study

Researchers from Germany report that using powerful 3 Tesla MRI without a contrast dye to assess disease activity in 359 people with MS was just as effective for identifying new lesions (damaged areas) as brain scans using the dye. Currently, many scanners are 1.5 Tesla, which is less powerful. (Tesla is the unit of measurement that indicates the strength of a magnetic field.) As 3 Tesla machines become more widely available, these results may help to reduce the need for contrast dyes like gadolinium, the use of which has recently raised some concern
