News on Mediterranean diet, stem cells and treatment benefits before MS diagnosis are among studies being presented at AAN meeting this week

The American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting is being held in Boston this week. Among presentations already in the news are:

the potential benefits of a Mediterranean diet for lowering the risk of thinking problems in MS
results of a stem cell trial in people with progressive MS
a second clinical trial suggesting that treating people with MS-like lesions on MRI but no symptoms (called Radiologically Isolated Syndrome) could delay the time before the development of a first neurological symptom significantly more than a placebo. [link]

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis, and there is currently no cure for MS. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. An estimated 1 million people live with MS in the United States. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, and it affects women three times more than men.
