Society-Supported Researchers Find Possible Mechanism for Rare Seizures in People with MS

are not very common in people with MS, but occur more frequently than in the general population and may not respond well to traditional drug treatments. In an effort to understand the mechanism of seizures in people in MS, researchers at the University of California, Riverside, examined tissue samples obtained at autopsy from people with MS who had experienced seizures, and from people who did not. The team found signs that astrocytes, cells in the brain, were less able to regulate brain signals that might contribute to seizures in people who had them, when compared to those who did not.
These findings warrant further research to help pinpoint treatment strategies that reduce the incidence of seizures in people with MS.
