Spanish Version of Cognitive Rehabilitation Technique Improves Learning in Small Study

February 24, 2020

Researchers from the Kessler Foundation conducted a small trial testing a Spanish version of the Story Memory Technique, which involves the use of imagery and context-based memory training. Ten participants using the technique showed significantly greater improvements in learning and life satisfaction than 10 people in a control group. This study was funded by the National Institute on Disability Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research.

Previous studies have shown the benefits of the English version of this method. Results like these provide the concrete data needed to ensure that cognitive rehabilitation interventions can indeed help people with MS to live their best lives. They also build a body of knowledge and confidence that should help convince insurers of their effectiveness.

The modified Story Memory Technique (KF-mSMTTM) is available from Kessler Foundation in English and Spanish for use by rehabilitation professionals. These professionals can contact the Foundation by email at mSMT@kesslerfoundation.org.
