Self-help Group Facilitator/Co-Facilitator

National MS Society self-help groups bring people together who share a common life experience (living with MS) for support, education and mutual aid. Self-help group leaders and co-leaders, with the assistance and participation of group members, manage the organizational and logistical aspects of group facilitation.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as liaison between group members and the MS Society, assuring that group complies with Society self-help group standards.
  • Secure accessible meeting space; determine meeting times and topics (with staff assistance).
  • Open and facilitate group discussion, encourage participation of all members.
  • Together with group members, plan and implement meeting agenda, including inviting guest speakers, using the disclaimer appropriately, planning special programs, organizing activities and refreshments, procuring videos, tapes, hand-out materials, etc.
  • Develop and implement group communication plan.
Qualifications:
  • Dedication to the MS Society’s mission, a personal relationship with MS, and a desire to make a difference for those living with MS.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Personable, empathetic and welcoming personality with strong communication, facilitation, motivational and organizational skills.
  • Consistent participation in on-going education efforts; willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of Internet/e-mail technologies and equipment.
  • Engagement in or support of Society-wide activities (e.g. Walk MS®, advocacy, etc.).
Education & Support:
  • Orientation/program education provided by staff prior to forming/assuming responsibility of group.
  • Each self-help group leader will receive a copy of Guidelines for Managing Self-Help Groups: A Manual for National MS Society Self-Help Group Leaders.
  • Staff partner will be available via phone and e-mail for collaboration and guidance.
  • Group members will be available to support activities as well.
Time Committment:
  • Minimum one-year commitment required
  • 3-6 hours/month for planning, communication and facilitation of monthly meetings
  • To minimize time commitment, shared leadership is highly recommended
