    1. Resources for Professionals

      Advances in research are changing the face of multiple sclerosis every day. The National MS Society is committed to helping healthcare providers keep abreast of these changes. To ensure quality care for people with MS, the National MS Society regularly offers Continuing Education programs for medical professionals. Some programs can be completed by mail or online; others promote networking by meeting in local healthcare facilities.

      Original air date: November 13, 2013. Learn from leading MS researchers and clinicians in California on what’s in the pipeline and on the horizon. Dr. Lilyana Amezcua from USC is defining genetic and ethnic contributions in MS, with an emphasis on Hispanic descent. Dr. Nancy Sicotte from Cedars-Sinai is examining MRI images to search for the underlying cause of MS-related depression. Dr. Emanuelle Waubant from UCSF is focused on the association of bacteria in the digestive tract and MS.

    15. Multiple Sclerosis and Smoking

      To date, few modifiable risk factors have been found to influence the development or course of MS. Cigarette smoking – which can cause serious health issues including lung cancer, increased risk of infections, and heart disease, and is the primary cause of preventable death in the United States – has also been identified as a risk factor in the development and progression of MS.
