Prospect Man Recognized For Raising +$100K For MS

March 14, 2016

PROSPECT, Conn. – Prospect’s Frank Monteiro accepts a ‘Mission Champion’ award from National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter, president Lisa Gerrol Sunday, March 6, at the chapter’s Annual Meeting in recognition of his raising more than $100,000 in one year for the MS movement. Monteiro, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013, is a member of the chapter’s board of trustees.

For his 40th birthday, Monteiro’s friends gave him an unexpected gift in the form of the Walk MS Team Frank’s Entourage, which had raised $4,400. In 2014, Frank’s Entourage participated in the Walk MS event in Cheshire, and was successful in raising $60,000. Last year, Frank’s Entourage grew even stronger and collectively raised $104,995.

Frank’s Entourage will continue their fundraising efforts at this year’s Travelers Walk MS, which will take place at Cheshire High School Sunday, April 16. This year, the chapter hopes to raise $1.4 million.

Each walk site will feature long and short fully-accessible routes. At this year’s event, we will also be introducing new healthy light fare, snacks and bottled water. The sites will also will feature a Mission Station- a new and exciting way for walkers to get involved, get information, earn rewards and gather some team spirit for the walk.

More than 6,500 Connecticut residents battle the effects of multiple sclerosis. In a show of support, each year thousands of loved ones, friends, neighbors and co-workers lace up and step out at Walk MS in solidarity for a single cause: to create a world free of MS.

In 2016, the Society is introducing the Living with MS program which honors those who are diagnosed with MS and participate in Walk MS. Participants will receive a Living with MS shirt and other special recognition during the event.

Funds raised at chapter events, such as Walk MS, ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents affected by MS.

About the Connecticut-Rhode Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society

The Connecticut Chapter strives to provide knowledge and assistance to help people with MS and their families maintain the highest possible quality of life. These goals are achieved through vital national and local programs.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
