Five years ago Ryan Underwood met a woman living with MS who rode her bike for 75 miles in Bike MS: Tour de Farms. Feeling inspired by her determination, Ryan sought ways to become more involved with the National MS Society, Greater Illinois Chapter. Today, Ryan volunteers on the Bike MS Committee and is a familiar face at Bike MS rallies. “[Bike MS] has changed my life,” said Ryan. “It has taught me a lot about life and people. I have met some of my closest friends through the MS Society.”
Ryan was first introduced to Bike MS by his uncle, Todd Underwood, who has volunteered on the Bike MS Committee for over 15 years. Though Ryan primarily focuses on supporting Bike MS, he also volunteers and participates in Walk MS and MuckFest MS. “I have a team for MuckFest. It was my first time ever doing a mud obstacle course, and to be honest, the best time I had all year ― you cannot stop laughing.”
Ryan is familiar with the Greater Illinois Chapter’s Everyday Heroes and considers this recognition to be the “greatest honor.” “I enjoy hearing everyone’s stories. It’s what drives me to help those in need.” He continues to urge others to join the movement to end MS. “From MS Slugfest to MS Half Court Classic, it does not matter what event you decide to do, just get out there and volunteer.”
