Traveling Turkeys FAQs

What is Traveling Turkeys?

The original purpose of the Traveling Turkeys program was to show appreciation to caregivers during National Caregivers Month (November). The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mid America Chapter wanted to send their thanks to caregivers across Kansas, Western Missouri, and Nebraska through Traveling Turkeys: Giving Thanks for Giving Care.

Traveling Turkeys has since evolved into a program that aims to ease the stresses, both physically and financially, of preparing a holiday meal for persons living with MS and their families by delivering grocery basket/grocery gift cards. The program also seeks to ensure persons living with MS receive a personal visit from a delivery volunteer to alleviate isolation during the holidays.

Why does the National MS Society Mid America Chapter support this program?

The National MS Society: Mid America Chapter supports the Traveling Turkeys program because we are dedicated to stopping MS in its tracks and helping people with MS live their best lives. By delivering a Traveling Turkeys basket, we ease the stresses of the holiday season for someone living with MS and their family. Everyone deserves a relaxing and joyous holiday—we are here to help make that happen.

Is Traveling Turkeys a national initiative?

No. The National MS Society: Mid America Chapter is proud to call the Traveling Turkeys program our own. While similar programs may be offered at other MS Society Chapters, our structure, execution, and amount of people we are able to assist make us unique! And we are proud of that!

I would like to volunteer to assemble and deliver baskets. How can I get involved?

I am a person who lives with MS and would like to receive a basket. How do I sign up?

Traveling Turkeys is a program dedicated to easing the stress of the holidays for those living with MS. This program provides a Thanksgiving basket of groceries for 4 people to a person with MS and their family.  Dinners are donated from a variety of sources and are available first-come, first-serve based on availability of donations.

Registration opens Friday, Oct. 14. Those requesting a meal will complete a registration and be placed on the list in the order requests are received. Signing up does not guarantee you will receive a basket and you must register by Friday, Nov. 4. You will be notified one to two weeks prior to Thanksgiving if we will be able to provide a basket to you.
