Project Goal:

The National Multiple Sclerosis is the oldest and largest nonprofit MS organization in the U.S. With offices and staff in all 50 states, the Society supports more MS research than any other organization in the world. The Society offers you the chance to achieve your professional goals at the same time you are making a major difference in the lives of people with MS.

Using society-wide resources and templates, the Outreach and Awareness Intern will assist with the creation and execution of an MS Awareness Week campaign; assembly and distribution of Walk MS ambassador kits; and with the creation of marketing pieces and corresponding web and social media work. Ideal for building marketing and communication skills.

Project Results:

  • More people take action during MS Awareness Week that grows the MS movement and drives meaningful change.
  • The Society is recognized as an organization that connects with people affected by MS to move their lives forward and as a driving force to end MS.
  • Walk MS communities experience reinforced connections to the Society’s mission, ultimately driving recruitment and fundraising totals.

Learning Objectives

  • Assist in writing MS Awareness Week chapter campaign plan
  • Carry out duties listed within MS Awareness Week campaign plan
  • Create MS Awareness Week toolkit items
  • Assemble and distribute MS Awareness Week toolkits
  • Interview and write small profile for all Walk MS Ambassadors
  • Assemble and distribute Walk MS Ambassador toolkits
  • Support communications duties as related to a variety of print and online materials

Required Skills

  • Interest in learning more about a marketing and comm.  career in nonprofit sector.
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Good ability to research online
  • Understanding of sponsorship, planning and marketing concepts
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Access to staff, computer, phone, technology equipment
  • The intern reports to the Marketing Manager and will provide scheduled updates of progress.

Time Commitment

  • Three-month unpaid internship (February 2015 – April 2015)
  • Requires roughly 16 hours/week of work that can be completed on your schedule
  • If your school has a credit program or offers work-study funds for internships, the Society would be happy to work with you and your school to meet qualifying site requirements for those programs whenever possible.
