Jonathan Mejia was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis while a sophomore at DeBakey High School for Health Professions. He was suddenly faced with decisions and choices he never imagined he would have to make. When given four possible medications from which to choose, he did a great deal of research and deliberated carefully. However, choosing his medication was only the first step of a very long road. MS drains him of energy and makes it difficult for him to focus in class. Despite the obstacles, Jonathan is determined not to let MS stand in the way and has excelled academically. His interest in mathematics has led him to seek and bachelor and master’s degrees in accounting. Throughout his struggle, Jonathan is immensely grateful to have his family by his side as they are a reminder that he is not alone. “MS may seem terrifying,” says Jonathan. “But it has made me a stronger person, brought my family closer, and made me optimistic about the future.”
