This research study is examining the effects of exercise training in persons with multiple sclerosis who have been on any stable disease-modifying therapy for at least 6 months. The study is interested in examining the influence of supervised aerobic walking exercise or stretching and toning exercise on cognitive performance and brain function in persons with multiple sclerosis who can walk without using an assistive device.
The study involves coming to the Kessler Foundation campus in West Orange, NJ three times per week for a total of 40 visits over a 3-month period. The first visit will take about 3 hours in total where participants will complete a cognitive and exercise assessment. The second visit will take about 2 hours where participants will complete an MRI scan and a few more cognitive assessments. During the next 36 visits, participants will come to the laboratory and complete supervised exercise training. These sessions will occur 3 times per week for 12 weeks and each session takes between 30-60 minutes. The walking and stretching exercise training conditions are supervised by certified exercise leaders. After these visits, participants will be asked to come to the laboratory and complete the same cognitive, exercise, and MRI assessments that they completed during the first two visits. For all sessions, we provide free parking and payment for participants’ time. We also can help arrange for transportation to and from the laboratory throughout the study, if necessary.
